If I'm citing an ebook or PDF file, do I need to include the url in my citation? I’m writing in MLA style.

If you only look at X, then you cite X. The in-cite format shows up as (X Page#). And, of course, you also add a full, correct citation to X in your own paper. You don’t mention Y at all. Or, your phrasing could be. “X reports that Y found that the bleaching of corals has increased 30% in the last 5 years (X Page#)” Or “in X, Y is quoted as saying “quote” (X Page#).” You still do not name Y, as you never looked at Y yourself. If X is not a sufficiently respected source, you need to go look at Y yourself. For example, if X is Wikipedia, and you were told you could get info from Wikipedia, but not to cite it, then you have to go read Y. Once you read Y, you quote or paraphrase Y, and you cite Y, both in-text, and in your list of sources. Always cite the most authoritative source you actually read. Then X would appear on your list of sources, but would not, for this item, appear as an in-line citation. For more, see this excellent guide to MLA from Purdue. MLA Formatting and Style Guide

Write on PDF: All You Need to Know

D. A note added 9/28/2013: For some of my students, I provide an MLA style reference (also known as footnotes) just for reference. I find the MLA format to be easier to read, and the MLA footnotes provide information to help you with your own paper. So, while I believe the footnotes for all of my references are excellent, I don't believe this is standard practice. (If the citations below are incorrect, please let me know -- and please add more references in the comments section.) A Note on Citation Examples: These are examples and explanations to show some of how your examples might be formatted in this format. This is just to give you the general idea, though, as much of it has changed over the years! The formatting is not 100% accurate and exact. If you are struggling with something, let me know, so I can try to.
